Ready-mix truck to dump truck conversion

I have a 1989 Peterbilt 357 Concrete mixer truck that has a worn out 8 yard mixer barrel. I am thinking about making it into a 10 wheel dump truck rather than replace the barrel as all my other mixer trucks are 10.5 yards. It has front crankshaft mounted hydraulic pump that runs the mixer bowl. Could I use that pump to power the ram for a dump bed rather than buy a trans mounted married pto/pump wet kit? Has anyone done this conversion? Any info would be appreciated.

You can certainly use that pump to operate the dump. It's probably more than you need but it's already there, no sense going to additional expense. If you get Rock & Dirt magazine there was a hydraulics supply dealer in it that ran a full page ad every month, they would be a good source for parts.

The pump is a Sundstrand Hydrostatic pump typical of mixer trucks. I'm wondering how the plumbing would work to use this as a hydraulic pump to power a single dump bed ram.

I was going to say that the pump would likely be a Sunstrand or a Denison. All that plumbing running under the cab creates a lot of heat in the mixer application and I would wonder how efficient that setup would be as opposed to the standard PTO dump setup where the pump would not be running all the time.An 8cy mixer might be handy for short loads etc and another drum might not be that expensive. We used to reline ours without any real special equipment.I'll bet that pump and hardware would more than pay for the PTO swap on the used market or even keeping it for parts..Ron G
