BILs old C70 is tired and rusted and driving me nuts. Dragged it out of the weeds last week, started chasing no start, led to eaten fuel hose then a rusted off stand pipe. Next up brake fluid dribbling down frame in three spots and power steering gear is running a pencil lead stream. Mind you I have replaced radiator, worked on rusted off brake tubing and overhauled the 4bbl governor holley twice over six years. Sitting is destroying it faster than anything. Had decided WTH time to pack it up, but the 366 still runs well when dribble gas down the throats, has a eaten up crash box 5 speed I believe is Clark with at least have the syncros bad and the 2 speed in non functional. Left door, door glass regulator and seat are trash as well no rockers nor floor pans left in old cab.

Called local yard and they have a few cabs to peruse which I will do tomorrow. May just get the wife or neighbor to aid me in dragging it up to the shop so can get a start on it. 5 or 6 yard bed needs a floor, some side reinforcements and some zippering welds redone and cab guard reconfigure but hoist itself is strong and functions smooth, Belt driven pump where can be a little odd at first but can use hydraulics with clutch disengaged and in gear. It AIN'T Purty. These were taken Four years ago. Can change the frame mount gas filter thru cab floor as well drop a basketball thru it never hit a edge.

Donor machine is aligning, just gonna be awhile to get it here, may end up disassembling this rust bucket to see if anything is salvageable. Have to get the shop cleaned up and cleared out.

Figured to get a little ahead of myself, not happening. Made up a temporary fuel pump system to scab onto the BILs Chevy, load that and tools in the GMC I completed this winter. RF Brake dragging severely so tractor out of shop, grain truck in as have new brake wheel hoses for the truck bought a few months back. Tires off RF caliper locked up, get that at a hold point and take LF down, one piston in it has not ever extended, time for both. Parts ordered local parts house, back on it in morning.

Calipers and wheel hoses went on last night after dinner, should pick up the pads about half an hour IF They came in. Replacement calipers are coated appears a powder coat of some kind, reminds me of Rattle Can Aluminum or Chrome Wheel paint but seriously Harder.

I've never seen disc brakes, I've been away from trucking since '97. Most I've read about were air over hydraulic but these look like they might be direct air?

GM and Ford started Hydraulic Disc on the medium chassis lines back in the 80s, this being a '85, Bendix, Hydroboost combination Vacuum with p/s fed hydraulic boost. First few years they would eat pads, calipers would seize in slides, couple system updates/improvements and then piston failures, rotor failures, MORE improvements and updates where GM still uses a similar system on the 5500 series up.

More problematic than corrective for the old drum systems but can actually get these apart when self destruct unlike the old Drum systems that would seize up adjusters and had to destroy drums or shoes to remove even as really made no difference as were junk by then anyway!!

Ugh!!

I think I'd look for a replacement cab and dump body if it were mine. I've been down the road of rust repair and not sure I'd do it again. You ought to be able to find a used dump body pretty reasonable, and I'd look south or west for a cab. You should be able to adapt a '73 through '88 pickup cab without too much trouble if you can't find a 50/60/70 series cab.

Already in the process Steve. Have a donor late 70s electrical mess from OK lined up. Dump body I have steel for the floor, came off the grain truck bed have intent to weld some opened seams and angle iron the side rails, gussets will just get cover patched where believe have enough sheet steel to reconstruct the cab guard wall but not the overhang. Am thinking on mechanicals as remove and reseal the Saginaw box, p/s pump, if use the other truck intact swap axles for the later disc brakes as they were all new a few years ago(By BIL) then just need to retube the donor and swap to Hydroboost on firewall.

Make a short story Longer, BIL and I spoke, he does NOT want the Chevy back, been donated TO Me. Will make of it what I can, when I tire of it will either get sold or Nephew(BILs Boy) will get it anyway.

Well wheeling and dealing has set me back to likely going to local salvage yard and buy just a cab, will patch panel as can to get what little use I need of this further then it will leave here as a rusty old tub just in some better shape to use. Bed will get a minimal approach for usable. Just been a bad end of week where decisions had to be made.

And it begins. Brakes are back, front crossmember cross tube R&R and custom bend replacement, truck is in the shop until p/s leaks are minimized(picked up pump cartridge yesterday) and steel is welded into the bed. Missing line nut installed on new tube.

P/S pump cartridge swapped, need to change return line off brake booster and input seals on the old Saginaw gear then can refill. Cannot really see it but had a dent in the can at the oring land. Had been pried on to set belt tension and at some point had seals changed where a edge was rolled on a rear retainer bolt hole, both got remediated.

Last line on, gearbox seal in and then worked over Gas lines, runs on its own pump now. Moved on to the bed floor.

Have hauled five loads out of the crater so far, was all good until found damp grassy spots, can almost spit on ground and get hung up wheels spinning. PS is remaining full, brake master as well and all working relatively good except a intermittent Hydraulic pump clutch fail to engage, but has not stopped use. Had tractor issues so stopped for a day, will be hauling clean dirt back in starting tomorrow and leveling out the dump piles..

Nice scenery!! Where are you located? I keep thinking about getting out of NY and am looking for someplace that isn't flat. I jst love the Hudson Valley here but hate what Cuomo has done to us, and I'm afraid it's irreversible.

Middle of MO just south of the MO River at Hermann, the beginning of the Ozark Foothills. Taxes not bad, property prices ARE Escalating as the City Dwellers evacuate out to here.

Are a number of stay away areas, too close in to I64 and I70 jct, or Columbia MO getting over toward KC, depressed areas are still around as the Clay pit regions around Montgomery and Audrain counties, Lake Ozark is ABSOLUTELY Insane price wise yet twenty miles in any direction away from there is depressed rock hill and tree farm ground, Poor soil.
