How Can Lane Departure Accidents Be Prevented?

A lane departure or roadway departure accident is defined as a non-intersection crash that occurs when a vehicle leaves the traveled lane, either by crossing the center line or edge line. These crashes can involve running off the roadway to the left or the right, or crossing the median or center line and striking an oncoming vehicle.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the majority of highway fatalities are attributable to roadway departures, accounting for thousands of crashes and deaths each year. Whether a car leaves the road, crosses the center line and causes a head-on collision, or crashes into a vehicle in the adjacent lane, the results can be devastating.
The people who design and build roads, including federal government and local county agencies, can take steps to increase pavement safety, such as improving pavement friction, employing the Safety Edge asphalt paving technique, and installing rumble strips and stripes between lanes. Reflective and retroflective signs and pavement markings can also reduce crashes by increasing nighttime visibility, but these signs and markings must be properly maintained to stay effective.

All of these technologies are readily available and well-known to road construction agencies, but sometimes factors such as cost or time constraints may lead to a decision not to employ them. When crashes are caused by roads that are defectively designed or improperly maintained, there may be many responsible parties to identify, including contractors, subcontractors, designers, engineers, and government agencies. These cases, however, are often challenging and complex.
Of course, the most well-built roads in the world cannot remove the dangers posed by drivers who negligently or intentionally leave their lane without first signaling and checking the traffic pattern around them. These driver negligence include fatigue, inattention, speeding, drunk driving, inexperience and failure to check blind spot etc.
To solve lane deviation problems coming from drivers, a lane deviation warning system can be installed in the vehicle. This system can detect the distance of road surface lanes, and give an alarm if the vehicle crosses the center line or edge line. Statistics indicate that this kind of systems do work in mitigating or reducing relevant accidents. Putting these technologies into vehicles has been a mandatory requirement by some state governments.
Despite the efforts of governments or business, drivers play the most important role in preventing a lane departure crash or other accidents. They should recognize their responsibility of being a safe driver, not only to themselves, but others involved.
